Freecom XS 3.0 Hard Drive - The First USB 3.0 Hard Drive

Freecom, external hard drive and portable storage company, recently announced XS 3.0 Hard Drive. Different from the hard drive that already exists in the market so far, XS 3.0 hard drive has brought USB 3.0 technology! With the launch of XS 3.0, Freecom has become the first company that release a portable hard drive that uses USB 3.0 technology.

Freecom, through its official release, also states that the XS 3.0 hard drive supports USB 2.0 backward compatibility. This means this device is capable of working on any computer that uses USB 2.0 technology. Of course the data transfer speed, if you use the hard drive on USB 2.0 is not going as fast as when using USB 3.0.

XS 3.0 Hard Drive is a 3.5-inch hard drive portable. XS 3.0 offers high transfer rate, which is 130MB per second. The size XS 3.0 was not too large, even freecom claims that the Freecom XS 3.0 hard drive is the smallest among all 3.5-inch hard drive. The weight of this hard drive is only 1.9 pounds or 1 kg.

Hard drives will be available in three capacities, 1 TB, 1.5 TB and 2 TB. And the price is quite cheap, which is starting from 119 euros (or about USD175). This hard drive will be available in Europe in the mid-November 2009. What about Asia? Let's just wait :D

Until now, there are only few devices that apply USB 3.0. Consumer goods is expected to immediately apply the USB 3.0 in 2010. The first motherboards that have been using USB 3.0 is the Asus P6X58, but unfortunately, this motherboard was canceled before it could be produced. While the first Operating System that supported for USB 3.0 is Linux version 2.6.31.
